Enefit gets environmental clearance for a 1 GW wind project off Estonia

The Estonian group Enefit Green has received environmental approval for its 1 GW Liivi Bay offshore wind project located in the Gulf of Riga off Estonia. An expert group from Skepast and Puhkim has assessed the environmental impact of the project and concluded that, with the implementation of appropriate mitigation measures, the wind project will have no significant negative impacts on the natural and human environment. The Liivi Bay offshore wind project is expected to feature up to 84 turbines, with an electricity production of up to 4 TWh/year. Construction is planned to begin in 2028 and to be completed in 2030.

In 2023, wind represented over 13% of Estonia’s installed capacity with 408 MW. The development of wind is a main priority for the country, with several offshore projects in development. Estonia aims to reach 4.3 TWh of renewable power generation in 2030, including 2.6 TWh from wind in order to achieve its target of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.
