The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed a commercial uranium fuel supply contract with Kazakhstan’s nuclear energy company Kazatomprom to supply the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates. ENEC expects the contract to open pathways for future collaboration, building on ENEC's diversified procurement strategy to ensure a secure and sustainable supply of nuclear fuel for the power plant.
The nuclear plant is being developed by Nawah Energy, a joint venture of ENEC Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), and will comprise four APR-1400 reactors of 1.4 GW each. Unit 1 began commercial operation in April 2021, unit 2 in March 2022 and unit 3 in February 2023; unit 4 completed hot functional testing in July 2023.
Kazakhstan is the world’s first uranium producer with nearly 22 kt produced in 2022. In terms of proved reserves, the country ranks second behind Australia, with more than 316 kt.
