ENEC receives fuel assemblies for Barakah-1 nuclear project (UAE)

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has received fuel assemblies for the first nuclear reactor at its Barakah project, currently under construction in western Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). The fuel assemblies will be stored until the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) approves the operating license for the first two units at Barakah.

The Barakah nuclear power project will include four Korean-designed APR-1400 pressurized water reactors of 1,400 MW (1,345 MW net) each, for a total capacity of 5,600 MW. Reactor vessels were installed at unit-1 in May 2014 and at unit-2 in June 2015. The first unit was on track to start operations in 2017 (delayed by one year earlier in May 2017) and the second unit is more than 70% complete (construction started in 2013). Unit commissioning is expected in 12-month intervals with the fourth unit. The four reactors should be operational in 2020.
