The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has completed major construction works on the third unit of the Barakah nuclear power project in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates). ENEC has completed the concrete pouring, the installation of the turbine generator, and that of the internal components of the reactor vessel and will now start the testing phase.
The US$24.4bn Barakah nuclear power plant is being built by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), a unit of Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) and will be operated by Nawah Energy, a joint venture between ENEC and South Korea's Kepco. It includes four 1,400 MW reactors, for a total capacity of 5,600 MW. The first reactor is scheduled to start operations between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 (delayed from 2017). Unit 2 is 93% complete, unit 3 is 83% complete and unit 4, 72% complete; the three units under construction are all scheduled for completion by 2020. Once operational, the power plant will cover almost 25% of the domestic electricity needs.
