Endesa, the Spanish affiliate of the Italian power utility Enel, has committed to close all its coal-fired plants three years earlier than scheduled, in 2027. There are currently three Endesa coal-fired in the process of being dismantled, including Andorra (Teruel), Compostilla (León), and Carboneras (Almería). In addition, the company requested in 2019 the closure of the 1.4 GW As Pontes plant (A Coruña), which is expected to be approved in 2022, and is processing the closure of the 240 MW Es Murterar plant (Alcudia) in the Balearic Islands.
Coal accounts for 5% of Spain's installed capacity, with 6.1 GW (end-2020). Since 2015, over 5.2 GW of coal-fired capacities have been stopped. The remaining coal-fired power plants will close between 2022 and 2030.
