Endesa decides to close its coal-fired power plants in Spain and Portugal

Endesa (part of the Enel group) has decided to stop its coal-fired power plants in the Iberian Peninsula and to review options for the related sites. Evolutions in commodity prices and in the CO2 emissions market in 2019 have degraded their competitiveness and these new conditions make their operations in the electricity market very unlikely in the future. Endesa could entail the recognition of impairment on the assets involved of around €1.3bn. The company has not communicated the exact date of its coal exit.

Endesa operates five coal-fired power plants in Spain, the 1.4 GW As Pontes power plant, the 1.1 GW Compostilla power plant (to be partly shut down in 2020), the 1.1 GW Litoral power plant, the 1.1 GW Teruel power plant (to be shut down in 2020) and the 468 MW Alcudia power plant (non-mainland). In Portugal, it operates the 628 MW Pego power plant, due to stop operations as soon as 2022.

The closure of the power plants is in line with Enel's strategy to fully decarbonise its power generation mix by 2050.
