Endesa Chile approves 6.3 GW of power projects in South America

Chilean power utility Endesa Chile (controlled by Italian energy group Enel, which took it over from its Spanish subsidiary Endesa) has approved the development of 36 power projects totalling 6,300 MW in South America, including 3,100 MW to be developed over the next five years. 23 projects representing nearly half of the total capacity (3 GW) of these projects will be developed in Chile, including 2,200 MW developed by 2020); 64% of the capacity will be hydropower and 36% gas-fired. Endesa Chile will also develop 13 projects totalling 3,300 MW (40% hydro, 55% and 5% of coal through the modernization of an existing plant) in Brazil, Peru and Colombia. These projects don't include the 150 MW Condors hydropower project, currently under construction in Chile and the 400 MW El Quimbo hydropower plant in Colombia (reservoir currently being filled). This decision is part of the group's strategy to expand operations throughout the whole South America region.
