EnBW will raise residential energy prices in 2019 (Germany)

German energy company EnBW will raise heating, electricity and gas prices for residential customers starting from 1 January 2019. Electricity prices will be raised by 3.8% and those of gas by 8.5%. The impact on households using electric heating will range between 5.9% (with heat pump application) to 7% (typical household with night storage heating). This move will affect the company's 5.5 million customers, most of which are located in south-western Germany.

The main driver behind this decision are the rising procurement costs in the wholesale market on the power exchange, which have risen by over 50% since 2016 (from €33.51/MWh to €50.56/MWh in average), while renewable support fees and power grid transport costs have remain unchanged.

According to EnBW, state charges and taxes make up 54% of the German customers final bills, which makes Germany's retail energy prices some of the highest in Europe. Power grid costs account for 25% while procurement and distribution 21% of final power bills, respectively.
