EnBW signs tolling agreement for share of 500 MW/2 GWh BESS in Italy

Zelestra has signed a long-term tolling agreement with EnBW for a 300 MW/1.2 GWh share of its 500 MW/2 GWh BESS project in Emilia-Romagna, northern Italy (EnBW press release, 16/07/2026).

The deal secures the development of Zelestra’s larger 500 MW/2 GWh BESS. With the agreement, Zelestra engages to build the BESS project, with EnBW taking the agreed share of the project’s capacity for the agreement’s duration. The project should start construction in 2027 and become fully operational in 2028. The project is located in the Emilia-Romagna region, where there is a strong industrial electricity demand where the project should help accelerate renewable integration, strengthen grid flexibility and support Italy’s decarbonisation objectives.

Zelestra aims to double its current 1.4 GW pipeline of solar and battery storage projects in 2026.
