The German energy company EnBW has commissioned one of Germany’s first hydrogen-ready gas turbine power plants at its generating site in Stuttgart-Münster (Germany). The facility currently generates heat and electricity from three coal-fired boilers, three waste-fired boilers and three steam turbines which are replaced with hydrogen-ready equipment sourced from Siemens. The modernized plant includes two new gas turbines (2x62 MW) to supply the city of Stuttgart with 124 MW of electrical energy and 370 MW of thermal energy. The plant is expected to start commercial operations in the near future and to run on 100% green hydrogen from the mid-2030s, provided sufficient hydrogen supply.
In addition, EnBW is also converting its previously coal-fired sites in Altbach/Deizisau and Heilbronn to hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants, which altogether should produce 1.5 GW and supply heat over 28,500 homes, 1,400 businesses and 380 public facilities in and around Stuttgart.
Renewable energy sources account for around 59% of EnBW’s installed generation capacity.
