Eletrobras plans to divest minority stake in Eletronuclear (Brazil)

Brazilian state-run power company Eletrobras has unveiled plans to divest a minority stake in its subsidiary Eletronuclear to a foreign company in order to be able to finish the construction works on the Angra-3 reactor located in the state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). According to local press, the interested companies include Russian Rosatom, Chinese CNNC and the French-Japanese consortium EDF-Mitsubishi.

The 1,340 MWe (gross capacity) Angra-3 reactor broke ground in 2010 and the schedule of works has been revised several times. The unit is currently expected to come online in 2023 and an international tender will be published before the entry into force of the new government in January 2019. Eletrobras requires an additional BRL17bn (US$4.2bn) to complete the construction of the reactor and BRL13bn (US$3.2bn) have been invested so far.

Eletronuclear currently operates two pressurized water reactors (PWRs) in Brazil: Angra-1 (640 MWe gross, 609 MWe net) and Angra-2 (1,350 MWe gross, 1,275 MWe net).
