Elementl Power, an independent nuclear power developer, has announced its plans to develop a 1.5 GW nuclear project in Southeast Ohio, United States (Elementl Power press release, 18/06/2026). The company has already signed an Early Works Agreement with GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy to use its BWRX-300 SMR’s for the project.
Elementl Power has agreed to purchase the site for the development from the American Municipal Power (AMP) to construct the project in Ohio’s Letart Township and has filed a request with the PJM Interconnection to connect the first 600 MW of the project into the regional transmission system; the company expects a response for its application before the end of 2026.
Construction of the first unit is scheduled in 2030, subject to a final investment decision (FID) and regulatory approvals from other regulatory bodies such as the US NRC and the Ohio Power Siting Board. The company expects to reach commercial operations in 2034.
At the end of 2025, the United States had a nuclear capacity of almost 104 GW, representing about 8% of the country’s total capacity.
