Romanian power utility Electrica has obtained technical grid connection approvals for 17 BESS projects totalling around 700 MWh in Romania, allowing the portfolio to advance towards design, permitting and construction (Electrica press release, 30/06/2026).
The approvals confirm the technical connection solutions and related conditions for integrating the storage projects into the electricity network. Electrica aims to commission all 17 installations by the end of 2027, strengthening system flexibility, energy security and renewable integration in Romania’s power system.
The projects form part of Electrica’s 2030 strategy, announced in October 2025, which targets 1 GW of electricity generation capacity and at least 900 MWh of energy storage. The company recently secured non-reimbursable European Union funding for a 22 MWh BESS at its Vulturu solar project and is also progressing the 70 MWh Fântânele BESS, expected to be completed in 2026.
According to Enerdata’s Global Energy Research, Romania’s electricity storage capacity is expected to double to 5 GW at the end of 2026.
