Eirgrid Interconnector line commissioned from Ireland to the UK

The East-West Interconnector or Eirgrid Interconnector between North Beach, Rush, in north Co Dublin (Ireland), and Barkby Beach in northern Wales (UK) was officially opened. This 500 MW cable started a testing phase on 7 August 2012 and will start its commercial operations on 1 October 2012. This is the second interconnection line between the UK and Ireland: a 500 MW line, the Moyle Interconnector, links Islandmagee in Northern Ireland to Auchencrosh in Scotland.

The project required an investment of €570m (€600m initially planned), of which €300m were financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and €110m by a grant from the European Union.
