EIB lends €85m for strengthening Greece's power grid

The European Investment Bank (EIB) will finance half of the €170m electricity network investment programme carried out by the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO), an affiliate of the Greek power provider Public Power Corporation (PPC). The €85m loan will help the Greek utility with the implementation of its network modernisation programme across the Greek mainland and islands. HEDNO will upgrade and strengthen electricity distribution across Greece, including large-scale investment in Athens, northern Greece and Crete. This programme will improve high-voltage substations and networks to ensure reliable electricity supply to PPC’s 7.2 million customers and will also improve remote monitoring of the electricity distribution network. It should facilitate connections to new renewable energy schemes and reduce the level of electricity lost through theft. The funds will enable the national network to better supply renewable energy, increase the domestic power consumption reflecting economic growth and improve reliable energy supply to domestic customers.
