EIA sees US energy consumption to grow by no more than 5% to 2040

According to the Annual Energy Outlook 2017 published by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), energy consumption is expected to increase by no more than 5% between 2016 and 2040, with the electric power sector being the largest consumer of primary energy. On the contrary, projections of energy production vary widely because production growth is dependent on technology, resource, and market conditions. Energy related CO2 emissions decline in most Annual Energy Outlook scenarii.

The EIA expects the USA to become a net energy exporter in 2017 as petroleum liquid imports are planned to fall meanwhile natural gas exports should rise. The extend of that situation highly depends on the energy prices: a high price would provide favourable economic conditions for crude oil and natural gas producers while restraining domestic consumption, enabling the most rapid transition to net exporter status.
