Egypt’s new updated NDC increases its GHG emissions reduction target for 2030

Egypt has released its updated nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, in which the country increases its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target in the power sector to 37% by 2030, relative to a business-as-usual scenario considering 2015 as the reference year. In its previous updated NDC (2022), Egypt’s GHG emissions reduction target in ther power sector was 33% by 2030.

This new objective equals a reduction of 80.52 MtCO2eq by 2030, compared to the emissions planned in the BAU scenario (214.7 MtCO2eq), i.e. Egypt targets 134.22 MtCO2eq of emissions in 2030. In its previous updated NDC, Egypt targeted a reduction of emissions of 69.91 MtCO2eq by 2030.

In addition, Egypt’s updated NDC brings forward to 2030 the country’s objective to reach 42% of installed renewable capacity (the previous target was 2035). According to the updated NDC, Egypt also plans to improve the energy efficiency of electricity generation by the maintenance, upgrade, and replacement programs for obsolete power plants, as well as improve and upgrade the transmission and distribution networks including extra high voltage substations, control centers, and smart grids.
