The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) have announced that three new tenders would be held to develop a cumulated renewable capacity of 500 MW in the West Nile region of Egypt. The pre-qualification phase for the wind tender offering up to 250 MW of capacity will start on 23 August 2015. A solar tender will offer 200 MW of solar PV capacity and the pre-qualification process will start on 30 August; candidate must have already developed at least three PV projects with a minimum capacity of 50 MW each and must include a bid bond for US$4.46m. The second solar tender for 50 MW of CSP capacity, to be launched on 6 September 2015, is open to candidates having constructed three CSP plants with a capacity of 30 MW each; the bid bond is set at US$1.16m. Projects will be developed on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis.
Egypt has already launched solar tenders. The last one, in January 2015, for 2 GW of large-scale solar capacity, 300 MW of solar PV capacity and 2 GW of wind capacity, was twice oversubscribed.
