The Egyptian Government has signed land receipt agreements with the Norwegian renewable developer Scatec and a consortium led by Orascom Construction for the development of two wind projects totalling 8 GW to be built in the governorate of Sohag, central Egypt.
The first deal was signed between Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and Scatec for the development of a 5 GW wind project, while the second agreement pertains to a 3 GW project to be developed by a consortium including Orascom Construction, Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corp and France’s Engie. Foreign direct investments for the projects are estimated at US$9bn.
The companies are expected to launch site studies upon land handover. These studies encompass technical assessments and measurements, and evaluations of the projects’ environmental impact.
In 2023, Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Egypt’s NREA for land allocation, in Sohag also, for the development of a 10 GW wind project.
At the end of 2022, wind represented 2.3% of Egypt’s installed capacity with 1.4 GW and 3.5% of its power generation with 7.4 TWh. Egypt targets 42% of electricity production from renewables in 2035, with 25% from solar, 14% from wind, and 2% from hydropower.
