Egypt signs financing deal for 1 GW Dandara solar + BESS project

The Egyptian government has signed preliminary financing and project agreements for the 1 GW Dandara solar+storage power project in the Qena Governorate with a total investment of USD650m (Egyptian government press release, 26/10/2026). The agreements were signed in the presence of Egyptian Prime Minister and involve financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), and the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The project will be developed by the Norwegian Scatec and is expected to include a 1 GW solar capacity and a 100 MW/200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is planned for implementation in two phases, with each phase adding 500 MW of solar power capacity and 100 MWh of battery storage.

According to the government, the project is expected to meet around one-third of the country’s aluminium’s electricity needs, helping reduce carbon emissions from aluminium production and improve the competitiveness of Egyptian products in international markets.
