Egypt plans to commission 3 GW solar and 600 MW BESS capacity in 2026

The Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt has announced that it will add 3 GW of new solar energy capacity in 2026, plus 600 MW of battery energy storage capacity before summer, increasing total grid-linked storage capacity to 1.1 GW (Egyptian government statement, 15/02/2026). Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy made the announcement amid expected 6% to 7% demand growth on the national grid during the coming summer months.

Egyptian authorities also reviewed progress on electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries. The minister highlighted the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia as vital for national grid stability in summer, noting that its first phase, providing 1.5 GW, is set to be energised in time to support the 2026 summer power supply plan.

Egypt targets a 42% renewable energy share in its power mix by 2030. Natural gas dominates the power mix (81% in 2024), followed by oil (7%), hydropower (7%), wind (3%), and solar (2%) (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
