Egypt greenlights 1.5 GWh BESS projects backed by AMEA Power

Egypt's government has awarded a "golden licence" to two battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects developed by AMEA Power-owned entities, representing a combined storage capacity of 1.5 GWh and total investments of USD800m (Egyptian government statement, 01/07/2026)

The licences were granted to Nefertiti Battery Energy Storage and Horus Battery Energy Storage., allowing the companies to develop, construct and operate the battery energy storage facilities, according to the statement. The "golden licence" streamlines the implementation process by bringing together all necessary approvals, including construction permits and land allocation, under a single authorisation.

  • Nefertiti will develop a 1 GWh battery energy storage system on a site covering more in the Benban area of Aswan Governorate
  • Horus will build a 500 MWh battery energy storage facility in the Zaafarana area of Suez Governorate.

Egypt expects its installed battery energy storage capacity to reach 14,320 MWh by 2028, according to Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat, who made the statement in June 2026 (Renewables Now, 07/07/2026).

Although Egypt continues to depend on natural gas for a significant share of its energy supply and electricity generation, the country is targeting an increase in the share of renewable energy to 42% of its power mix by 2030 (Enerdata Global Energy Research).
