Egypt expects 1.6 GW solar project to be fully operational in 2019

The Ministry  of Investment and International Cooperation of Egypt expects the 1.6 GW Benban solar project in the Aswan governorate to be fully operational at the end of 2019. The US$2bn project is partly financed by the World Bank through the IFC (US$653m support) and is being built in stages. So far, 19 parts of the park (around 1,465 MW) have been connected to the grid, while the remainder is undergoing testing.

The Benban solar power project is being built under the Egyptian government's FiT (Feed-in Tariff) program for renewable energies, that aims to develop a total solar capacity of 2.3 GW at the beginning of the next decade. The project was approved in 2016 and will sell the produced power to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) under a 25 years Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Egypt has set a target of 20% of power generation from renewables in 2022 and over 40% by 2035. The solar energy plan aims to install 3.5 GW by 2027, including 2.8 GW of PV and 700 MW of CSP.
