Egypt approves 2.72 GW solar projects + 2 GWh battery storage

Egypt approved the implementation of four energy projects by Kemet Industries Group, the executive arm of United Egypt Group for National Industries (Government press release, 17/02/2026).

The projects comprise two solar power plants in Bahariya Oasis with capacities of 320 MW and 400 MW, a 2 GWh standalone battery storage facility in Nagaa Hammadi, and a 2 GW solar power plant in the same location. These projects are slated for completion and operation in 2027.

This announcement aligns with Egypt's plan to commission 3 GW of new solar capacity in 2026, plus 600 MW of battery storage before summer amid projected 6-7% demand growth over the coming summer months (KEI, 18/02/2026).

Egypt aims for a 42% renewable energy share in its power mix by 2030, where natural gas currently dominates (81% in 2024), followed by oil (7%), hydropower (7%), wind (3%), and solar (2%) (Enerdata Global Energy Research)
