Egypt and Russia sign new agreement on El Dabaa nuclear project in Egypt

Egypt and Russia have signed supplementary protocol to their existing intergovernmental agreement on nuclear cooperation, aimed at fast-tracking the construction and operation of nuclear power plants in Egypt, including the 4.8 GW El Dabaa nuclear power plant. In addition, a  supplementary annex to the existing contract for the El Dabaa plant, between Egypt’s Nuclear Power Plants Authority and Atomstroyexport, the Russian state-owned company involved in the project’s construction.

The 4.8 GW, US$29bn El-Dabaa nuclear power plant, which is expected to become fully operational by 2030, will comprise four VVER-1200 units with a capacity of 1.2 GW each. The first reactor entered construction in July 2022, the second in November 2022, the third in May 2023 and the fourth in January 2024.
