Egypt and Cyprus sign power interconnection agreement

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and EuroAfrica Interconnector have signed a framework agreement on the construction and commissioning of a power interconnection project between Egypt and Cyprus. The project would include two 1,000 MW subsea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables that would be developed in two phases.

This power interconnection project highlights the increasing cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt. In September 2018, the two governments agreed to jointly build a pipeline to ship gas from the Aphrodite deposit offshore Cyprus to Egypt. The pipeline project would be hooked to the existing pipelines, which connect Egypt's offshore gas fields with the liquefaction facilities of Idku and Damietta (Egypt).
