EGAT commissions second phase of 1 GW hydropower project (Thailand)

Thailand's state-run power company Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has commissioned the two 250 MW units 3 and 4 of the Lamtakong Jolabha Vadhana hydropower plant in north-eastern Thailand. Lamtakong Jolabha Vadhana is a 1,000 MW pumped-storage hydropower project, which was developed in two phases of 500 MW each. The first two units rated 250 MW each were completed and commissioned in 2002, while the construction of the units 3-4 started in 2015. The underground plant utilises excess power in the electricity system to pump water to be stored on an upper reservoir during the off-peak demand period.

In addition to the Lamtakong Jolabha Vadhana plant, EGAT owns other pumped-storage hydropower plants, most notably the 360 MW Srinagarind plant units 4-5 in the Kanchanaburi province and the 171 MW Bhumibol plant unit 8 in Tak province. Moreover, EGAT plans to develop a new 800 MW pumped-storage hydropower plant, named Chulabhorn.
