EDP Renovaveis, the renewable arm of the Portuguese energy company EDP, has inaugurated a 580 MW onshore wind power complex in the Rio Grande do Norte state, in north-eastern Brazil. The complex consists of 14 wind parks divided into three clusters: Monte Verde (6 parks, 319 MW), Boqueirao (2 parks, 79 MW) and Jerusalem (6 parks, 181 MW), totalling 138 turbines. The wind complex is expected to generate around 3 TWh/year of electricity, enough to supply 1.5 million Brazilian households, and to help avoid the emission of over 1 MtCO2/year. Construction of the complex began in 2021.
EDP Renovaveis already has 800 MW of renewable installed capacity in the Rio Grande do Norte state, as well as more than 300 MW under construction. At the national level, EDP Renovaveis has already installed over 1.1GW of renewable energy.
As of the end of 2021, wind represented 11% of Brazil’s installed capacity with 20.8 GW (100% onshore) and 11% of its power generation with 72.3 TWh.
