EDPR Australia, the Australian subsidiary of the Portuguese energy group EDP, has decided to fast-track two solar hybrid projects with a combined capacity of 1.7 GW in Australia. The projects have been awarded generation revenue schemes under the Australian Government’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS) Tender 4 for two of its projects: Punchs Creek Renewable Energy Project in Queensland and Merino Hybrid Project in New South Wales (Australia). The combined projects will feature 1.5 million solar panels to generate about 2.2 TWh/year of renewable energy.
The Punchs Creek project, located in Queensland, will comprise a 400 MW solar PV plant combined with a 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS); it is scheduled to reach financial close in 2026 and to start operations in 2029. The Merino Hybrid Project is located in New South Wales, and it consists of a 450 MW solar PV plant combined with a 450 MW/1,800 MWh BESS; it is expected to reach ready-to-build status in the second half of 2026.
EDPR Australia has a pipeline of over 30 renewable projects (about 4 GW) and is focusing on scaling hybrid projects, aiming at deploying over 2 GW of solar, wind and storage by 2030 in Australia.
