Edison inaugurates a 780 MW ‘hydrogen-ready’ gas-fired plant in Italy

The Italian energy group Edison, a subsidiary of France’s EDF, has inaugurated a 780 MW CCGT gas-fired power plant in Marghera (eastern Italy) that is set to also run on a hydrogen-gas mix in the future, which is expected to be even less polluting.

The power plant comprises a 515 MW combined-cycle turbine technologically ready for the use of up to 50% hydrogen mixed with natural gas. It is also equipped with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) with a catalytic nitrogen oxide reduction system and a 265 MW steam turbine. The power plant is thus able to reduce specific emissions of NOx by up to 70% and CO2 emissions by up to 30% compared to the average turbine of Italy’s thermoelectric park.

Construction of the power plant lasted 4 years and required a total investment of €400m. The power plant, which has an energy efficiency of 63%, will be able to meet the needs of about 2 million Italian households.
