EDF's nuclear generation dipped by 6% in 2016 (-7.9% in France)

French energy group EDF has released its 2016 results, posting a 5.1% drop in sales (to €71.2bn), mainly due to a 5.7% decrease in sales in the generation and supply activities in France (down to €35.2bn). This induced a drop in the net income excluding non-recurring items by 15.3% to €4.1 bn. However, the group's net income (group share) more than doubled to €2.9bn (lower impairment losses and positive effect of the extension to 50 years of the accounting depreciation period of the PWR 900MW reactors in France). The group also stabilised its net financial debt to €37.4bn.

During the year, EDF commissioned 1.2 GW (gross) of wind and solar capacities, reaching an installed renewable capacity of 9,614 MW (6,263 MW net) at the end of 2016, plus 1,780 MW (1,188 MW net) under construction. Its wind project pipeline amounted to 13.1 GW and to 5.4 GW for solar PV.

EDF's global power generation declined by 5.7%, from 619 TWh to 584 TWh in 2016, owing to a 6% contraction in nuclear generation, from 483 TWh to 454 TWh. In France, nuclear outages (and their extensions related to additional tests) contributed to a 7.9% decline (-32.8 TWh) in nuclear generation in France, from 417 TWh in 2015 to 384 TWh in 2016. This was partly offset by a 7.4% (+4.5 TWh) increase in the United Kingdom to 65.1 TWh. CCGT power generation rose by 12.5% to 46.9 TWh, while hydropower generation grew by 5.7% to 46 TWh - in France, it rose by 9% to 42.4 TWh - and renewable power generation by 7.4% to 14.5 TWh. Coal-fired generation fell by 40% to 22.9 TWh.

In 2016, EDF sold 320 TWh to end consumers (-35 TWh, including 134 TWh to residential customers, 147 TWh to non-residential customers at market tariffs and 39 TWh to non-residential customers at historical tariffs) in France, 122 TWh to net market sales (+36 TWh) and 39 TWh through structured sales, auctions and other sales (-12 TWh).

The group also sold 9 TWh in the United Kingdom, including 35 TWh on the wholesale market, 14 TWh to households, 13 TWh to Centrica and 16 TWh to small and medium entreprises. Its thermal power generation in the UK eroded in 2016 (-12.9 TWh for coal).

In Italy, Edison sold 45 TWh (+1.1 TWh) in 2016, with 27 TWh sold on the wholesale market (36 TWh purchased on the wholesale market), 13 TWh on the IPEX and 5.9 TWh to end customers. The group's thermal power generation rose to 7.3 TWh (+6.8%), while hydropower and renewable generation fell by 18% to 1.8 TWh.
