EDF will stop its 2 GW West Burton A coal-fired plant in 2022 (UK)

EDF will end operation at its 2 GW West Burton A coal-fired power plant in Nottinghamshire, England (United Kingdom). Two of the four 500 MW coal units will be available only to meet capacity market commitments over the next 18 months and the power plant will enter decommissioning by the end of September 2022.

The coal- and lignite-fired power capacity in the United Kingdom has been falling in the last 30 years, from more than 40 GW in 1990 to 20 GW in 2015 and less than 9 GW in 2019. In January 2018, the British Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) unveiled a phase-out plan for its eight-remaining coal-fired power plants. In December 2020, the British government launched a consultation on bringing forward the deadline for phasing out coal from the country’s energy system by one year, from October 2025 to 1 October 2024.
