EDF signs PPAs for 420 MW of wind projects in South Africa

EDF Renewables has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the Coleskop, San Kraal and Phezukomoya wind projects with installed capacities of 140 MW each, totalling 420 MW and located on the boundaries of the Eastern and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa. Each project will comprise 26 wind turbines, with a height of 124 m and a blade length of 83 m. The three projects are to be commissioned from mid-2024 to beginning of 2025.

The three projects were awarded Preferred Bidder Status in October 2021 under Round 5 of the fifth bid window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP) by a consortium led by EDF Renewables in South Africa, together with H1 Holdings and GIBB-Crede, two South African companies. Wind accounts for only 6% of the country’s installed capacity, with 3 GW. South Africa’s capacity mix is dominated by coal, with a share of 67%.
