EDF has filed requests for authorisation to start the construction of a pair of EPR2 reactors at Penly, in Normandy (France), as well as the administrative procedures for its completion and its connection to the electricity grid. With this, the Group aims to start preparatory work towards mid-2024.
This pair of EPR2 reactors is the first of three pairs previously proposed by EDF to the French government in May 2021. The other two pairs of EPR2 reactors are expected to be built in Gravelines (northern France) and at Bugey or Tricastin (south-eastern France).
In May 2023, the French Parliament adopted a nuclear stimulus law that removed the previous cap of 63.2 GW of total authorised nuclear capacity and the objective of limiting nuclear power generation to 50% of the French power mix by 2035. The law paved the way for the construction of six new EPR reactors by 2035 and for launching studies for another eight EPRs as well as SMRs (Small Modular Reactors) to have 25 GW of new nuclear capacity by 2050.
