EDF (France) will invest €8bn to develop 10GW of power storage by 2035

EDF plans to develop 10 GW of additional power storage around the world by 2035, on top of its already existing 5 GW capacity. For this purpose, around €8bn will be invested over the 2018-2035 period. They will be dedicated to storage technology applications such as batteries and pumped-storage hydroelectricity.

The company will double its investments in research into storage for the power system to €70m in the next two years. Besides, EDF's subsidiary EDF Nouveaux Business plans to grant a third of its investments (approximately €15m) over the 2018-2020 period to new projects linked to electricity storage and flexibility.

EDF aims to become the leader of self-consumption services incorporating batteries in France and Europe. One of the key markets is Africa, where the company plans to develop a portfolio of 1.2 million off-grid customers through local partnerships by 2035. Access to electricity via solar panels and batteries will be developed in particular in Ghana and Ivory Coast.
