EDF Energy will extend lifetime operation at 2 nuclear plants (UK)

EDF Energy, the British subsidiary of French energy group EDF, has announced new scheduled closure dates for four nuclear power reactors in the United Kingdom, namely Heysham 1 and Heysham 2 in Lancashire, Hartlepool in Teesside and Torness in East Lothian.

The group will extend the scheduled closure dates for Heysham 1 and Hartlepool by 5 years to 2024, while closure dates for Heysham 2 and Torness will be extended by 7 years to 2030. In 2015, EDF's nuclear generation reached 60.6 TWh, its highest level for ten years and 50% above their 2008 level, when EDF acquired the plants. This announcement follows life extensions at other Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) power plants. EDF expects British policies such as the Carbon Price Floor and the Capacity Market to continue, in a context of challenging market conditions.

In addition, the final investment decision for the £18bn (€23bn) Hinkley Point nuclear project will be taken soon. EDF Energy plans to start construction of two new nuclear reactors in 2019.
