EDF Energy shuts down 2 GW Cottam coal-fired power plant in the UK

EDF Energy has stopped operations at its 2 GW Cottam coal-fired power plant in North Nottinghamshire (United Kingdom). The closure was announced in early 2019, due to the challenging market conditions over the last few years that made the power plant no longer economically viable and the context of the global drive to decarbonise power generation.

The Cottam power plant started to generate power in 1968 (commercial operations beginning in 1969) and operated for the past 50 years, generating nearly 500 TWh of electricity since its start. Initially expected to operate for 30 years, the power plant consists of four coal-fired power units, of which two were rated 507 MW and two 497 MW.

Apart from the Cottam power plant, EDF Energy also owns the 2 GW West Burton-A coal power plant in North Nottinghamshire, which has capacity agreements in place for three of its four units in place until the end of September 2021. Operations at the West Burton A plant are also at stake and EDF Energy plans to review its future beyond that date.
