EDF considers stopping Cordemais coal-to-biomass conversion plans (France)

The French energy group EDF has announced that it might not continue with its plans to convert its 1,260 MW Cordemais coal-fired power plant located in the Loire region (France) to biomass. The "Ecocombust" project consisted of the conversion of the coal-fired Cordemais power plant into one that burns pellet fuel made from discarded wood. So far, the "Ecocombust" conversion project has failed to meet the technical and economic requirements necessary to pursue the project. Consequently, the Cordemais coal-fired power plant will stop electricity production in 2027.

Meanwhile, EDF’s subsidiary, Framatome, plans to create a prefabrication plant on the Cordemais site for the manufacturing of the Main Secondary System piping destined for EPR2s reactors (French Pressurised water reactor project).

In September 2023, the French government announced its plans to phase out coal by 2027 by converting its remaining two coal-fired power plan to biomass.
