EDF has agreed in principle to invest up to £1.1bn (€1.3bn) in the Sizewell C nuclear power plant project in the United Kingdom. This investment would be made at the time of the project's final investment decision (FID), once negotiations with the UK Government and other investors are concluded. EDF’s stake in Sizewell C would then represent approximately 12.5%.
The Sizewell C project involves the construction of two nuclear reactors using EPR technology, located at the Sizewell nuclear power plant. The total capacity of the new reactors would be 3.2 GW. The project is designed as a replica of the two EPR reactors currently under construction at Hinkley Point C, also supported by EDF.
The UK plans to expand its nuclear capacity to 24 GW by 2050, which would account for around 25% of the country’s projected electricity demand.
