EDF and NPCIL sign MoU on 9.6 GW Jaitapur nuclear project in India

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with French power utility EDF on the construction of six nuclear reactors at Jaitapur in Maharashtra (India), following a cooperation agreement signed in January 2016.

EDF and NPCIL aim at completing technico-commercial negotiations by the end of the year and starting the implementation of the project in early 2017.

In 2009, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Areva signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the construction of the Jaitapur plant, including lifetime fuel supply for the units. A pre-engineering agreement was signed by the two companies in April 2015, paving the way for the licensing of the EPR reactor design in India. The Jaitapur project, located in Maharashtra, would consist of six 1,600 MW EPR reactors, manufactured locally ("Make in India" policy) through an industrial partnership and joint ventures between Indo-French manufacturers.
