Ecuador has published its Second NDC with an implementation period from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2035. In its NDC, the country commits in its unconditional scenario to achieve a projected reduction of GHG emissions in 2035 of approximately 8,800 kt CO2-eq (7% with respect to the 2010 baseline scenario among all mitigation sectors), while in the conditional scenario the country proposes to achieve an additional 8% reduction, which represents approximately 10,600 kt CO2-eq, subject to the support of international cooperation.
In 2022, total GHG emissions in Ecuador stood at 88.2 MtCO2eq and the baseline scenario forecasts an increase in emissions to 130 MtCO2eq by 2035; the inconditional target would limit emissions to around 120 MtCO2eq (around 1/3 above 2022 emissions), while the conditional scenario would limit them to around 110 MtCO2eq, i.e., around 25% above their 2022 level.
To achieve these goals, the country plans to implement 55 mitigation initiatives and 26 initiatives to address the country's climate risk, which is expected to represent an investment of about US$6.5bn of which 27% is unconditional and 73% is conditional. With its NDC, Ecuador reaffirms its commitment to contribute to the fulfilment of the objective of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
