The Puerto Rican energy company EcoEléctrica has been given green light to boost the production of its LNG import facilities in Guayanilla Bay (Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, US) by the United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The company plans to add 93 mscf/d (961 mcm/y) on top of the existing capacity. Once commissioned, the additional output will increase the total regasification capacity up to 279 mscf/d (2.8 bcm/y). The regasification plant also includes an unloading terminal that can hold LNG tankers of up to 140,000 cm, and has a 160,000 cm storage tank.
EcoEléctrica's main shareholder is Gas Natural Fenosa with a 47.5% stake. It operates a 263 MW combined cycle plant along with the regasification plant. Both came into operation in 2000. The power plant was the first project in Puerto Rico to produce electricity with natural gas, producing about 15% of the electricity consumed on the island.
