ECL announces 1 GW off-grid hydrogen-powered data center in the US

The US data center solution company ECL has secured a site to develop its TerraSite-TX1 project, a 1 GW off-grid hydrogen-powered artificial intelligence (AI) data center near Houston, Texas (United States).  The AI factory data center would be powered by hydrogen, supplied by three separate pipelines that meet at TerraSite1, eliminating the need for additional fuel transportation, and would not be connected to the state's power grid.

The US$8bn project is expected to be delivered in phases, with the first one (50 MW) being planned to be completed in 2025, for an approximated cost of US$450mn. The facility may be expanded from 1 GW to 2 GW in the future, if there is enough customer demand.

Texas' power grid operator Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) estimates that the state’s power grid needs will nearly double by 2030, due in part to the growth of data centers and AI.
