The European Commission (EC) endorsed the acquisition of Centrica's gas-fired combined cycle (CCGT) UK Langage and SHB assets by the Czech company Energetický a Prumyslový Holding (EPH). Centrica Langage is a power station located near Plymouth (UK) with a generation capacity of approximately 905 MW while Centrica SHB is located near Stallingborough (UK) and has an installed capacity of approximately 1,310 MW. The transaction was concluded for £318m in cash (€360m) in June 2017. The EC acknowledged that the purchase did neither raise competition concerns nor infringe the EU Merger Regulation.
Centrica sold the plants because it is currently shifting its priorities towards its customer facing businesses whilst reducing its focus on large scale central power generation assets.
EPH already owns several power stations in the UK, namely the 2 GW Eggborough and the 420 MW Lynemouth coal-fired facilities. Lynemouth stopped generating power in December 2016 under the current environmental rules but is due to be converted to burn wood pellets and reopen within 18 months. Eggborough Power, the subsidiary of EPH in charge of operating the Eggborough plant, has applied to the British authorities to demolish the coal-fired facility and build a new 2.5 GW CCGT on the site.
