EC approves €385m Lithuanian renewable energy support scheme

The European Commission has approved a €385m support scheme meant to support electricity production from renewable energy sources in Lithuania under State Aid rules. The programme will be introduced in May 2019 to prop up the deployment of renewable energy installations and further help the country reach its national target share 38% renewables by 2025. It will be applicable until 1 July 2025 or until the aforementioned objective is achieved. According to the European Commission, it will contribute to the European Union environmental goals without unduly distorting competition.

The renewable power plants that will benefit from the scheme will receive support in the form of a premium that will be set through a competitive bidding process for all types of installations, regardless of the size of the installation and the renewable technology used. The final premium value will not be set at a greater level than the difference between the domestic electricity market price, known as the ‘reference price’ and the average production costs of the most cost-efficient renewable energy technology in Lithuania, known as the ‘maximum price’. Both prices will be set by the Lithuanian national energy regulator for each auction.
