The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has lent EUR70m finance the construction and operation of 5 large-scale BESS projects in central Europe (EBRD press release, 20/05/2026). The EUR70m loan will support Slovenia’s energy storage company NGEN Energetske Rešitve to deliver 302 MW of storage energy capacity across Latvia, Romania, Slovenia and Poland. The BESS will be supplied by Tesla and the projects will operate under a merchant model, selling the generated energy directly into the wholesale market. Poland will have two BESS projects, while the facilities in Latvia and Slovenia will be among the largest standalone utility scale battery installations in their respective markets. The development of the projects is expected to improve grid stability and renewable energy integration.
The EBRD is a leading implementing partner for the EU’s InvestEU programme to support sustainable investment, innovation and job creation in the region. It aims to trigger more than EUR372bn in additional investment between 2021 and 2027.
