East Anglia 3 offshore wind project capacity will rise to 1.4 GW (UK)

The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) of the United Kingdom has approved ScottishPower Renewables' request to increase the capacity of its 1,200 MW East Anglia III offshore wind park to 1,400 MW. The project, developed off the Suffolk coast (England), will still include 172 turbines, whose capacity will be raised. It was approved in 2017 as a single 1,200 MW project or as a two-600 MW phase project. Construction is expected to start in 2020; the project could achieve first power generation as early as 2023 and could be commissioned by 2025. It could supply enough power to cover the consumption of 989,200 average British households.

The East Anglia project developed by ScottishPower (part of the Iberdrola group) is made up of several phases: East Anglia-1 (under construction, 714 MW, expected in 2020), East Anglia-1 North (under development, 800 MW), East-Anglia-2 (under development, 800 MW) and East-Anglia-3 (approved). Another phase, East Anglia-4, is under consideration.
