The Dutch state-owned gas transmission system operator (TSO) Gasunie has signed a binding contract for the lease of a 4 bcm/year floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) from the US energy infrastructure company New Fortress Energy. The vessel, which is expected to arrive in the third quarter of 2022, will be moored in Eemshaven in the north of Groningen for the next five years.
In April 2022, Gasunie contracted the 4 bcm/year FSRU S188 from the Belgian shipping company Exmar, which is expected to arrive in Eemshaven in August 2022. With this second FSRU installation, Gasunie subsidiary EET BV is expanding its new LNG terminal in Eemshaven, to a total import capacity of 8 bcm/year, nearly doubling the existing regasification capacity in the Netherlands.
As well as Eemshaven, the existing Gate terminal at Maasvlakte (Rotterdam) will also undergo optimisation to enable more LNG to be realised. The LNG Gate Terminal (Gas Access To Europe) in Rotterdam has been operating at no more than 10% of its capacity (9.2 bcm/year) since its commissioning in 2011.
