The European Commission has approved a EUR780m Dutch support scheme for renewable hydrogen production under EU State aid rules, contributing to the objectives of the Clean Industrial Deal (EU Commission press release, 06/08/2026). The scheme will allocate aid through a competitive auction expected to be completed by Q1 2027.
Support will combine an upfront investment grant covering up to 80% of eligible investment costs with a variable operating premium paid over five to ten years. Beneficiaries will be required to comply with EU sustainability criteria for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs).
According to the Dutch authorities, the scheme is expected to support the deployment of around 400 MW of electrolysis capacity and enable the production of up to 40 kt/year of renewable hydrogen. The programme could avoid approximately 324 ktCO2/year of emissions. It follows two previous Dutch hydrogen support schemes approved by the European Commission in 2023 and 2024, which also aimed to accelerate electrolyser deployment in the country.
