The Dutch - German power transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT has presented Target Grid, its vision for the power grid of 2045, based on the highest electrification scenarios of the Dutch II3050 (Integrated Infrastructure Survey 2030-2050) and the German NEP2023 (Grid Development Plan).
The TSO expects electricity demand to surge between 2019 and 2045 in Germany (+628 GW, including +156 GW in industry, +147 GW in transport and +14 GW in households) and in the Netherlands (+138 GW, including +63 GW in industry, +54 GW in transport and +9 GW in households). This would require a 723 GW increase in power supply by 2045-2050 (from about 180 GW in 2019 to over 900 GW in 2045-2050) with most of the capacity increase from solar (+480 GW), onshore wind (+113 GW) and offshore wind (+112 GW).
TenneT is proposing a network of DC superhighways and energy hubs across the North Sea, the Netherlands and Germany, integrating onshore and offshore power generation and transmission assets, and improving existing AC transmission lines. The TSO will discuss with stakeholders during the summer and autumn 2023 and plans to complete its Target Grid Map with Target Market, 110-150kV grids and System Operations by the end of 2023.
